Hiking the Susquehannock Trail: An Adventure Unfolds
In the world of hiking, every trail has its own unique story to tell. And on my second day tackling the Susquehannock Trail, I discovered a tale filled with surprises, challenges, and even a touch of the supernatural.
A Dry Start
The morning greeted me with a pleasant surprise—a dry shelter and clothes! As a hiker, waking up without the damp embrace of condensation is a victory in itself. I savored the moment, enjoying a warm cup of tea and a friendly chat with a young angler and his canine companions. It's these small interactions that often bring joy to the trail.
Trail Tunes and Tendonitis
As I ventured forth, the dense hemlock forest and the tunes of Dead Can Dance and The Creatures set the tone. But, alas, my body had other plans. The familiar twinge of tendonitis reminded me of the physical demands of hiking. I couldn't help but regret my choice of footwear, wishing for the waterproof mid-Topos I'd left behind. This is a common dilemma for hikers—the right gear can make or break the journey.
A Trail of Surprises
The Susquehannock Trail, it seems, is full of surprises. As I hiked, I stumbled upon rare Jacob's Ladder flowers, a sight to behold. But what truly caught my attention was the trail's unique use of switchbacks, a rarity in this region. It's these unexpected elements that make hiking an adventure.
A Haunted Encounter
The trail took an eerie turn as I approached mile 30. A sign, crafted by the Welfare Hollow Sign Shop, hinted at a haunted hilltop. The STS Guidebook spoke of the 'Hide-Behinds', a mysterious species lurking in the north-central Pennsylvania woodlands. What makes this particularly intriguing is the idea of an unknown creature, one that hides from humans. It's a fascinating concept, playing on our innate curiosity and fear of the unknown.
I couldn't help but feel a sense of foreboding as I hiked, half-expecting a creature to leap from behind a tree. The guidebook's mention of a protective rune, not included, added to the mystery. This section of the trail, with its quiet atmosphere and spooky signs, is a testament to the power of storytelling and local legends.
Pushing Through
Despite the tendonitis, I pressed on, determined to reach Morgan Hollow Shelter. The descent was steep, but the shelter provided a welcome respite. As I hung my gear to dry, I reflected on the day's journey. The trail had offered a mix of physical challenges and intriguing encounters, leaving me with a sense of accomplishment and curiosity.
The Hiking Experience
Hiking, in my opinion, is as much about the journey as it is about the destination. It's about embracing the unexpected, from physical ailments to supernatural legends. Personally, I find these experiences shape our perspective and test our resilience. The Susquehannock Trail, with its dry shelters, rare flowers, and haunted tales, offers a rich tapestry of adventure. It reminds us that every hike is a unique narrative, waiting to be discovered and shared.
